Washington D.C.

Mary Christ-Erwin, Partner and Executive Vice President, is based in Porter Novelli's Washington, D.C. office. Over the past two decades, she has committed significant attention to the challenges and opportunities presented to industry products and services by issues such as obesity, food policy guidance, issues advocacy and emerging consumer health and nutrition trends. She regularly works with industry and influencer organizations to identify communications strategies to address issues in the context of consumer lifestyle needs, particularly as they target creating synergies among family and community. Currently, she provides ongoing counsel to clients including the Almond Board of California, Nature Made, and SOYJOY, among others. These programs, designed to communicate leadership and demonstrate issue preparedness require significant insight into current and emerging issues. Translation of science into influencer, business and consumer communications on issues is a hallmark of Mary's work for corporations, commodity groups, associations and public/private coalitions. A frequent speaker on development and communication of issues-driven messages, she helps to facilitate the Columbia University Industry Roundtable, created by Columbia's Human Nutrition Institute, has spoken at their meetings and recently was a guest speaker for the new obesity course created by Columbia's College of Physicians and Surgeons. Mary is a member of the Institute for Food Technologists Nutrition Committee and is a member of the IFT Joint Task Force on food science and nutrition.

"It is an honor to work every day to help promote awareness of the importance of health and nutrition," Mary says. "No matter what the challenge, I am always inspired by the dedication and the talent of the people I work with."

>Ed Dixon

Ed Dixon

Porter Novelli
Singapore

Edward Dixon brings more than 22 years of corporate communications and public relations experience with global brands to his role as managing director of Porter Novelli Singapore with responsibility for Porter Novelli's southern Asia network (ASEAN, ANZ and India). Ed's success at managing international programs is rooted in a perspective developed while working and living in the U.S., Europe and Asia. In Singapore, his team manages clients including Gillette, Hewlett-Packard and the Singapore government - many of which require a world-class strategic approach that integrates relevant local insights to ensure brand stories resonate in Asian markets. Ed's experience in corporate communications, consumer branding, digital PR, employee communications and CSR comes from stints at Porter Novelli New York, where he guided globally focused client teams for Hewlett-Packard, the Financial Times, McAfee Security, Bank of America and Timberland. Ed also spent 14 years in-house, as vice president of global communications at MasterCard International and as public affairs officer for Citibank's Global Consumer Bank. He holds a master's degree in public communications from Fordham University. Passionate about how technology impacts and improves consumers' lives, Ed blogs on travel technology. He's a master scuba diver, a published photographer and a longtime volunteer for Operation Smile, a global nonprofit that provides reconstructive surgery to children born with facial deformities. He's an avid traveler who has visited more than 70 countries on six continents, and in February 2010 will take part in a research expedition to Antarctica to document the impact global warming has on the flora and fauna of the continent.

"There is no true 'global communications strategy,'" says Ed. "Brands will succeed on a global scale only if they communicate in a way that creates relevant dialogues at the regional, country, city, village and individual level. There is much to learn from the targeted communications strategies that social media tools like Twitter have helped create. High-tech or low-tech, it's imperative for brands to understand cultural nuance and develop impactful conversations with their audiences, whether they are next-door or 9,000 miles away."

Before joining Porter Novelli, Gary spent nine years at Saphar & Associates in Rochester, N.Y., a full-service agency where he served as vice president and director of account management. His clients during that period included Eastman Kodak Company, Rochester Telephone and AkzoNobel, and his experience encompassed fields as diverse as digital imaging, telecommunications, printing and publishing, industrial finishing, solid waste, mining and politics. Gary began his career as a business reporter at the Buffalo News. He holds a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Rochester. In his spare time, he is a runner and cyclist, and also drives a 1999 M3 on racetracks in the northeast - a passion he draws from to lead Porter Novelli.

"One of the first things I ever learned racing cars turned out to be one of the most important things I ever learned, period," Gary says. "You go where you look. If you focus on the wall, you are going to hit the wall. Hard. But if you keep your eyes on the straightaway ahead, you'll clear it. This is how races are won. At Porter Novelli, we work hard to keep from looking at the walls and steer our clients clearly into the straightaway."
